Road Signs
Isn't it stupid that some road signs are highlighted with a bright orange border? It might make drivers take more notice of them, but causes you to take less notice of the rest!

The BBC don't like to admit that pop music wouldn't be where it is today if it hadn't been for the offshore 'pirate' radio stations in the 1960's. They broadcasted pop music, not available on BBC radio at the time, from ships around the British Coast. In those days 3 miles from the coast was international waters, unaffected by UK law.
The radio ships usually transmitted on the AM Medium Wave (MW/MF) band whereas the more modern-day land-based pirates use FM VHF wave band for higher quality but over a shorter distance.
The longest running is Radio Caroline, 1964 to 1990 from the North Sea. You can still listen to it now, run entirely by volunteers in the same style as it was from the ship, from a land-based studio (see link below).

Don't you just hate Windows 'tabs' on pc's? Very confusing when they change round when you click on a row behind (see picture). Software designers got the idea from filing cabinet dividers, but those don't re-arrange themselves as soon as you touch one! (Other photo: a filing cabinet drawer).

I lived here from 1968 to 1987.
Reigate has some amazing tunnels and caves. Sadly most of those under the town centre have been filled in. They were sand mines which I have fantastic memories of discovering when I was 13.
There are some tunnels dug into the South side of Reigate Hill which I explored on a couple of occasions. These were for millitary use in the war. It's difficult to get information on these because I think they are still officially a secret.

My Home My Home & Solar Heating
Photos show solar roof which heats the hot water. The new roof you see in the picture uses toughened glass the same size as standard roof slates, aluminium absorbers with solar-absorbing paint and copper water pipes attached under. Heat insulation on the back.

I thought that was the reason, then he confirmed it when he told me a few days later. He's not someone I would be interested in anyway and I didn't even reconise him at first! Records
Put water on your records!
Do you still play your records / vinal, whatever you like to call them? They are more reliable than CD's and less likely to skip, but are often scratched giving poor sound. I have found a very effective way of curing the problem - simply spray the record with water! The crackles are greatly reduced and the stylus cleans it as it plays with water in the grooves. I imagine that no-one dared mention this simple process to prevent an age-old problem because putting water near electrical equipment is considered dangerous. Shame it's too late to be of use to the majority of us, most use CD's now! (Those who still use records for 'mixing' usually use 12" singles which are able to be recorded louder so scratches are less significant).

March, 2006 The News The News
Whether there are many important things happening in the world or nothing at all, tv & radio news programmes last just as long every time. Newspapers are always the same size, the same amount to read.
This means that on some days we hear alot of trivia and other days not enough information.
You would think that with so many radio & tv channels, one or two could be a bit different by only reporting important news, filling the rest of the time with something more useful.
An American radio station had the right idea. One day, instead of the news, its listeners tuned in to hear something like: "There is nothing of importance in the news today". Then went on to the next show!
Tell me what you think - click Add a comment below! ExcusesExcuses Here are some of the excuses myself and my mates have been given from internet contacts as to why they can't meet up after pre-arranging to do so. Their excuse often given only a few minutes before the agreed time to meet, or even several weeks later.
The internet is a great place to make new friends, but it seems that actually meeting these people is far harder.
So you've invited a friend round, you keep the day free to tidy the house and maybe prepare a meal. Or you are visiting them so you get yourself ready, check you have petrol in your car, gather together whatever you're taking and off you go.
Obvious? Easy? Normal? Of course it is, if you are meeting friends from the pub, from work, college mates, football etc. But meeting a friend from the Net is a different matter, so it seems.
You have made all the arrangements, then just at the last minute comes the excuse...
[4 hrs after the time he said he'd visit] "Sorry I didn't come round, it was raining" [I asked him if he had an open-top car and he said "No, never mind" !?! "I fell asleep" "I have to go back to work because the police are "I was stabbed".
"I was waiting in the car park" [he knew my address & phone number].
"My plans have changed".
"No petrol and no money till Wednesday" "My brother got cancer". "I didn't have a car available". "Was not back in time from New York" [hadn't mentioned such a trip 2 days earlier - lives in UK]."I can't phone you now because I had a bad car crash last night and have to go to the police station" [text msg]."I was run over by a car outside my house and my mobile phone was destroyed, so I lost your number and couldn't let you know I was in hospital". "I was drunk" [it was early afternoon & not long after arranging to meet]."I got ill" [happened 2 times in a row, seems his mobile phone was ill too!]."I am waiting at the end of your road" [text msg - what on earth for I don't know because I invited him to my house, age mid-30's]."My mobile phone is faulty, I can only receive text messages, not send them, that's why I couldn't contact you". "I had an emergency". "My roof leaked so I had to have an emergency repair". "Dropped phone down toilet" [this also somehow prevented him from using MSN, public phone box, etc]."I got food poisoning". "Fell out of the bath and broke 2 bones in my foot" [this somehow prevented his hands from working so he couldn’t phone, email, etc etc]."I can’t visit by train even though you will pay my fair because I’m suffering sun stroke, so you will have to collect me by car" [a round-trip by car would have been 2 hours – 4 hours if you include taking him home again]."Sorry I can't meet you after all, my parents didn't tell me we were going out to dinner" [he announced in a phone call as I was half way to meeting him 15 miles away, having asked me round 2 hours earlier. We had been chatting for weeks, he never contacted me again]."I had car problems" [he said, 3 weeks after promising to come round within an hour. His ‘car problems’ also mysteriously switched off his mobile phone too!]"I'm late because the person who was going to give me a lift ended up in hospital"
Don't employ these people as postmen/delivery drivers etc, letters would never get there!
Many people have told me that meeting people from the internet is risky, I disagree. Risky compared to what, staying in bed all day and never going out?! I have actually made some great friends over the Net, but have been threatened and attacted by socialising in another very traditional British way - by going to pubs! I have never been threatened by anyone I've met on-line! Tell me what you think - click Add a comment below! March, 2006 Halifax Halifax
The Halifax bank have a useless computer system for their phones! Since January 2006 they have phoned me most days of the week, sometimes twice a day, including Sundays, asking to speak to someone who moved out of my house 3 years ago.
When they first started doing it I explained he had moved, they still phoned. I explained that I keep getting these calls, they said they will delete my number, they still phone.
Now I just put the phone receiver on the side, leaving them to chat to themselves, no point in me talking to them, they take no notice anyway.
Sometimes they are so rude they hang up as soon as I answer. I can tell it's them by keying in 1471.
The number they call me from is 08708 503492.
It's ironic that for the last 3 years I have had my phone number on websites for all to see, and haven't had a single annoying phone call. Yet it's a big organisation that's harassing me!

Tell me what you think - click Add a comment below! March, 2006 Street LightsStreet Lamps When could you last see the stars at night? Why do they keep adding more street lamps to our roads yet tell us to save energy? We have got this far without them so why do we need them now? If car lights are not enough, how do they manage on unlit roads? Not 'energy saving bulbs' - Old lamps were 100W and switched off for several hours of the night when few people were about. New lamps of similar height are 68W each and stay on all night, ok so they are much brighter but they use so many more of them. Hardly a saving is it? The very tall lamps are much higher wattage. Example: A small no-through-road near my house had its 3 white lamps which weren't even needed (the road is quite flat & open with pavements each side) replaced with 17 bright yellow lamps, floodlighting the area. 17x68W = 1156 Watts of energy being burned up every night! Same as an electric fire, summer and winter. I don't know why there was controversy when the local football pitch got its floodlights, at least they turn theirs off, and they don't use them every evening anyway. Ok, so perhaps they need to be brighter in town centres, but not for the sake of CCTV cameras because they can use infra-red lights. If outdoor lights are needed anywhere then it's on the footpaths away from roads between houses etc, many of which are unlit. Street lamps don't reduce crime! All we need are a few dim lights to show us the way when walking in the dark. If you need more light, buy a torch! Insurance companies are partly to blame for lights around buildings on all night, they insist on the lights before they will insure the building, presumably to show burglars the way in... It's a shame they don't make modern street lights ornate like the old ones, see photos below:
Tell me what you think - click Add a comment below! Gay RulesGay Rules
Here's a bit of fun... I have thought up 5 'rules' referring to gay people from my own experience :- 1) Most gay guys have 'issues'.
2) Gay relationships rarely work for long, compared to straight. 3) There are greater age-differences between partners on average compared to straight relationships. 4) The best gay s3x is with a straight guy. And here's a spanner in the works... 5) Gay and Straight as a person doesn't exist, we are all unique. Gay/Straight just refers to our lifestyle at the time. To say all humans are Bi-sexual would be closer to the point!
(Do a normal left-click. Nothing will happen until it downloads, which is about 20 minutes on 2Mb broadband. It will start automatically. The file size is 36.5MB. It is a ram file. You need Real Player to view it).
There's a much better word than 'gay', it's 'Holebi'. Its the combination of homosexuals, Lesbians & bisexuals. Tell me what you think - click Add a comment below! Your MSN Space / Skype / My View of the World 2. Skype
A free telephone system for chatting pc to pc anywhere in the world over the net! It's like MSN audio but the sound works better. You can call ordinary telephones on it too, for a fee. Cheaper than BT if calling over a long distance. Usually more expensive for local calls though. If you want to use Skype, click HERE (Right-click & select 'Open in New Window') to go to their homepage. Download the program and install it, all you need then is a pair of headphones with a microphone! (It works best if you use a pair of headphones with mic attached, rather than pc speakers and a built-in mic on your pc).
This icon shows if i'm on-line on Skype.
